Conservatives and their supposed "liberal feminist" allies have long aimed their attacks at trans youth. They claim that they are merely protecting impressionable children from indoctrination and irreversible mutilation. Many, though not all, of them argue that adults are free to pursue gender change.
The thing is, it is known that those who transition in their youth are exceedingly passable. Those who did not undergo natural puberty usually turn out to be visibly indistinguishable from their cisgender peers.
This, apparently, is the source of great anxiety among conservative men. If some statistics are any hint, "transgender porn" is a very popular category on various online porn sites, especially so in the red states. Their deep-seated homophobia cannot tolerate the thought that a pretty young girl they might be attracted to could be a man. As trans people became more ubiquitous, especially in major cities and college towns, these conservative men must live with deep anxiety and paranoia that they might accidentally become gay. It would reduce the maddening anxiety of these conservative men if trans people transitioned in middle age, so they wouldn't be so easily passable, and if they were forced to carry papers that say they are male.
Conservatives, especially since 2024, have also focused their political efforts on ending legal recognition of nonbinary and trans identities. This is sold as protection of women and girls.
Recently, however, the Heritage Foundation showed the real agenda: to repeal Title IX. Several far-right talking heads publicly call for a repeal of the 19th Amendment to limit voting rights to males only. Some states have attempted to monitor the interstate travel of women, ostensibly to enforce the abortion ban.
To enforce sexism, one must first be able to define sex and ensure that no loophole exists for women to escape discrimination and oppression by becoming a man or a nonbinary person. The Republic of Gilead needs all females to carry an ID that bears the scarlet letter F. That's hard to enforce if women can change it.
They are not interested in defending women's "sex-based rights"; they are only interested in fortifying patriarchy and protecting cisgender men's rights. They pay lip service to protecting the "delicate femininity" of girls from "men" (funny, it's always "girls" but "men," not "boys"), but at the end of the day, they do not care even a bit about females except to control and dominate.
